A yellow beret moment

No longer do I feel harried and hounded through the day

by the swift approach of winter nightfall.

Yes, it's getting dark;
but more slowly.
This is 5.18 pm and that's
a big improvement.

The crocuses are out.

And the sun shone brightly through the stained glass

I have a sudden hankering for a yellow beret

and a bunch of daffodils to match.

  2. I think you may be right. It was a wonderful exhibition and the full size originals of Shopping with Mother were a joy to behold.

  3. I did enjoy the Ladybird Books exhibition at the De la Warr.... I particularly enjoyed the grown-up sons saying excitedly 'Oh look! The Fireman! We had that!' - it seemed everybody has happy memories of their Ladybird books...

  4. I'm off to visit Two Temple Place today. Never been before. Butt not dressed as finely as the mother in your book. My hat & gloves will be to keep the cold out!

  5. As someone who had to wear a beret as part of her school uniform I can confidently say that it is something I will never hanker after, no matter what the colour!

  6. Lucille, I love berets, although yellow would not suit me as well as it will suit you. Go for it!

I know what you mean about recognizing the lengthening daylight hours. We've had so many overcast days recently that some of this lengthening has been obscured. Then...when we have actually had a clear day, the brightness is pleasantly startling at 5 pm.

  7. I never go shopping with my children without having my hair set first. It makes all the difference to the charm of our excursion.

    2. My school beret was blue , and I've never felt the slightest desire to wear a beret again ... or a grey felt winter hat with blue ribbon .... or a panama hat with blue ribbon .
In fact I don't wear blue much at all .

  8. I was the proud owner of a brown beret and then later a navy hexagonal beret for school. There was also a Panama and a brown velour hat. I still have my Panama hat.

  9. I was made to wear a dark brown beret at school and, like the Veg Artist, have never wanted to wear another. My Mother wore a yellow one and my Father wore a black one which somehow stood tall upon his head, most odd.

  10. I always say I can't wear yellow, but a beret, now there's a thought!

  11. Did little boys wear their school uniform every day?
I loathe berets. School navy for years, an impulse-buy purple one some years ago, immediately regretted, and once, when I was very young, one whose colour I don't recall, but that I hated so much I hid it inside an ornament on the landing window. My mother would have found it, I suppose, and understood, for she never mentioned it.

  12. PS Navy velour (elastic chin strap) for winter at boarding school, panama in summer. Also loathed.....
